Sufi Foundation Shaikh-ul-Mashaik Maheboob khan

The Sufi Foundation Shaikh-ul-Mashaik Maheboob khan was established on June 6, 1996, with the following objective:

“To collect and manage the musical compositions left behind by the namesake and their documentation, to evaluate their expert performance, and to support, to the best of our ability, the musicological study and biographical knowledge related to them. This is also intended to promote and support the Sufism of Hazrat Inayat khan.”

In this context, one of the ways in which the foundation seeks to achieve its objectives is by contributing to musical performances, lectures, and special events in honor of Noor Inayat khan. She was deeply involved in Indian music and the Sufism of her father, Hazrat Inayat khan, who was the older brother of the foundation’s namesake.

Explanation: Foundation’s Namesake

Shaikh-ul-Mashaik (“Arch-Sheikh”) Mir (“Emir”) Pyarumiyan Maheboob Khan (Baroda 1887 – The Hague 1948) left India in 1910 with his older brother and nephew for a “grand tour of the West” lasting two to three years, traveling from California to Russia.

Due to the interest they received, as well as their marriages to Western partners, they became unintentionally rooted in the West over time. Mir Maheboob Khan’s personal favorite city, above all others, was The Hague, where he frequently returned from 1921 onwards and eventually settled in the 1930s. His daughter bequeathed his residence along with an extensive collection of historical documentation and memorabilia to the foundation. As a result, a research and information center was established, serving a continuous stream of inquiries for data and study materials on various related subjects. Alongside this, the foundation provides and distributes Maheboob Khan’s songs, which have been published either earlier or more recently by the foundation. The ultimate goal is to create a scientifically and artistically responsible, well-substantiated, and complete edition of his works in the future.

The Foundation

Objective
The foundation aims to provide a foundation and facilities for the continuation of the life’s work and the cultivation of the life values of Shaikh-ul-Mashaik Pyaromir Maheboob khan (1887-1948) in the context of promoting the Sufism of Hazrat Inayat khan. His contribution to this form of Sufism and its associated musical tradition is emphasized by focusing on his musical heritage, particularly his own compositions. Additionally, the foundation recognizes the historical, cultural, and biographical connections of his life and remains committed to preserving his place in Sufism as a member of the 1910 triumvirate and the first successor in Sufi leadership. This is essential to ensuring the authenticity of the mentioned form of Sufism. Furthermore, the foundation supports renewed encouragement and reinforcement of an additional return to the French principles within Sufism, in the broadest sense of the term. The foundation also engages in and supports studies and research, publications, and performances that promote and represent Hazrat Inayat khan’s Sufism, benefiting both member organizations and independent institutions.
